Overview

Ronald William Fordham Searle was an English artist born in 1920 in Cambridge. He was known for his cartoons, sculptures, illustrations, comics, and more. Searle was a part of the Territorial Army during World War II. It was during this time that he documented the brutal camp conditions of his period as a prisoner-of-war of the Japanese. 


He survived the war, and returned with 300 of his drawings, which were then published in various forms, and formed the foundation of his 1986 book, Ronald Searle: To the Kwai and Back, War Drawings 1939–1945.


Best known for St Trinian's and Molesworth, Searle leaves behind a legacy and an influence on many cartoonists and illustrators like Hillary Knight, Matt Groening, and more.
