Gray stone : Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A fine piece of traditional ancient stonework from the Colima and a lovely example of a hand-carved stone celt or axe, with a smooth surface and a curved cutting edge.

The celt has a slightly trapezoidal profile with a butt end that flares upward to the blade. The stone is a cool gray tone with mottled beige inclusions. Although celts were utilitarian tools for chopping and cutting that were sometimes used as weapons, examples like this were used for ceremonial rituals. Black stone : Colima Blackstone Celt. Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, Protoclassic Period, ca. 100 BCE to 250 CE. A fine example of a hand-carved stone celt bearing lustrous black hues interspersed with beige veins. The celt exhibits an elongated trapezoidal form with a sturdy butt end, stone-polished faces with a smooth texture, and a lightly flared head with protruding corners.
