Overview

Born in 1893, John Armstrong was a British artist and muralist, who is renowned for his Surrealist paintings. Born in Sussex, Armstrong originally started to study law at Oxford before switching over to art. He served in the army during World War One, before returning to resume his studies at St. John's Wood Art School and also briefly working in theater design. During World War Two, he became an officially commissioned war artist. It was after this war that Armstrong's style moved more towards symbolism than Surrealism.
