Study for the illustration appearing on p. 38 of "The Fairy Tales of Charles Perrault" (1922) with the caption, "This man had the misfortune to have a blue beard." This study differs in several details from the published version. Here, Bluebeard stands in the entranceway to his castle, stairs lead down to a courtyard in the background, his head bare, and in his outstretched left hand he holds a handkerchief. In the published illustration Bluebeard stands outside his home, wears a large plummed hat, and strokes his beard with his left hand.
The light sketches on the verso, of couples dancing, are possibly studies for "The Ridiculous Wishes."
A fascinating look into Clarke's working method and a more detailed than usual sketch with Bluebeard's features and costume clearly defined.
